Now the kids will finally think I’m cool!
Mix Master Mike has routinely pushed the envelope in terms of both sound and innovation during his career. Magma Chamber 360 VR is a perfect example of his foresight. It also shows how artists and content producers can collaborate to create something special. I was eager to review this award-winning 360 music experience because maybe the kids would think I was cool.
Magma Chamber 360 VR Review
“Magma Chamber 360VR” by Mix Master Mike / WINBUSH
Jonathan Winbush of WINBUSH Design & Animation and Tony Washington worked to bring Magma Chamber 360 VR to life. It was developed shortly after the release of the online album, “The Magma Chamber” (from DJ Mix Master Mike and Copeland Entertainment). I know Mix Master Mike from his groundbreaking work with the Beastie Boys and I still enjoy confusing my kids with the video for “Intergalactic”.
Magma Chamber 360 VR has received significant acclaim. It’s received a pair of Vega Digital Awards, a Muse Creative Award for innovation and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. Magma Chamber 360 VR was made with Mettle, meaning producers used the Mettle 360/VR plugin for After Effects. I strapped on a Gear VR for this review but you can use a Daydream, Cardboard or equivalent headset to see it all.
There’s a fluid narrative in Magma Chamber 360 VR as you journey to reach the infamous Magma Chamber. You start off behind the wheel of a car as a radio ad for Mix Master Mike provides some foreshadowing. A turn of events lands you at the feet of a pretty sketchy looking bouncer in an even sketchier looking back ally. Everything sounds like an average Tuesday night so far right?
Inside The Magma Chamber
Once a muscled shirtless midget punches you out (you’re reading that correctly), you find yourself inside. A pair of sexy greeters meet you in a hallway that can best be described as a hellish firestorm. The faint beats of Mix Master Mike can be heard in the distance and that’s when the fun begins.
The Magma Chamber itself is a sub-terrain expanse complete with nightmarish go-go cages, TV screens held in place by giant hands. You’re joined by a legion of shirtless disciples in gas masks head-bang to the beat. The setting comes alive with the music of Mix Master Mike and you get a glimpse of his talent in 360°.
An impressive amount of detail went into the conception and design of the Magma Chamber. The art style stays consistent throughout the video and it demonstrates that virtual reality does not need to be realistic to be entertaining. Aspiring Geologists should learn about real life magma chambers elsewhere.
Funky Fresh VR Beats or Scratched Record?
Magma Chamber 360 VR is worth checking out. The end result successfully blends the fresh beats of Mix Master Mike with some cutting-edge visual effects. Even if you’re not a Mix Master Mike fan, you can appreciate the work that went into creating this virtual DJ experience.
Since the success of Magma Chamber, Jonathan Winbush, Tony Washington, and the rest of the team went on to create Moonbase Invasion. It’s another 360° VR production featuring Mix Master Mike. MoonBase Invasion and their recent Moonbase Remix are available to enjoy as well.
Even in VR, I can’t dance!
