Crank up your TARDIS and slap on your bow tie because soon you’ll be on an adventure across time and space in virtual reality! The BBC is currently at work on a Doctor Who VR experience placing you (the viewer) in the shoes of a new and unlikely companion. Details on the project are scarce but it has been confirmed that this exciting opportunity to become the Doctor’s companion comes with the usual brand of peril.
Doctor Who: The Runaway
An interactive VR narrative set in the Doctor Who universe is exactly what fans have been craving and Jo Pearce, creative director for BBC’s digital drama team is confident in the project. Pearce explains fans will “Experience the TARDIS like never before.” She adds that fans of the series will feel right at home and Jodie Whittaker’s reprisal of the iconic role, this time as an animated Doctor, was a big part of the equation. “The Doctor is full of warmth, wit and charm – helped by a wonderful performance from Jodie.”
Zillah Watson heads up the team at BBC VR Hub, working alongside Passion Animation Studios and Pearce to produce an interactive experience that exceeds user expectations. It’s an exciting and challenging task as Doctor Who is notorious for having some of the most devoted yet often demanding fans in all of pop culture. Watson’s goal is to bring virtual reality to the mainstream and explains how the series is ideal for VR. “Doctor Who has been pushing boundaries for over 55 years, and VR enables us to explore a whole new dimension of storytelling.”
No official release date has been announced, nor are there specific details on which VR platforms Doctor Who: The Runaway will be compatible with. Early talk suggests moderate interactivity in this animated VR adventure, so it’s safe to assume those with Gear VR, Oculus Go or better will have no trouble living out the ultimate nerd fantasy. Doctor Who: The Runaway is set to have a runtime around 12 minutes and will be available in the coming months.
It IS bigger on the inside!
